Discover Beekeeping Experience – Half Day
Welcome to our Beginner Beekeeping Experience. This friendly and simple 4-hour session is perfect for anyone who wants to learn about bees. You do not need any experience. We explain everything step by step, so you always feel comfortable.
What This Experience Is About
This session takes place at our Detling Apiary in the Kent countryside. Because we keep group sizes small, you receive personal guidance and plenty of time to ask questions.
In addition, you will learn how a bee colony works and why honeybees are so important.
Your Beekeeping Introduction
First, we start with an easy and clear introduction. You will learn:

What honeybees do

How their life cycle works
-
Why each bee has a special job
-
How bees collect nectar and make honey
This simple lesson helps you understand the hive before you open it.
Hands-On Time With the Bees
Next, we help you put on a bee suit and gloves. Once you are ready, we open a real beehive together.
During this part of the experience, you will:

Hold frames from the hive

See brood, pollen, and honey

Learn how to spot the queen

Understand how bees communicate
Because safety is important, we guide you at every moment.
Honey Tasting and Refreshments
After the hive inspection, we take a short break. During this time, you can enjoy tea, coffee, and a tasting of our raw local honey with fresh bread and cheese.
You can also ask more questions and learn even more about bees.
How You Can Help Bees at Home
We also show you simple ways to support bees in your own garden. As a result, you leave with easy ideas that help local wildlife.
These steps are small, however they make a real difference.

Do I need experience?
No. This session is made for beginners. We guide you through every step.
Is it safe?
Yes. We give a safety briefing and stay with you at all times.
What if the weather is bad?
If needed, we rearrange your session. We always put your safety first.
What should I wear?
Closed shoes or boots plus long socks. This helps your bee suit fit well.
Can children join?
Yes, we advise ages10+, although an adult must stay with them during the whole session.
Do I get anything to take home?

Absolutely brilliant time! We signed up for the whole day, beekeeping in the morning, candle making in the afternoon. Luke was brilliant, really knowledgeable and so interesting, I’ve learnt many fascinating details about how bees live and what it takes to look after them successfully. The candle making was great fun, even on the hottest day of the year so far! Getting hands on with the bees in the bee suits was the best bit of the day, and we even took back fresh honey for our lunch. All round one of the best things I’ve ever done. Thank you to Luke and his lovely daughter, who also made gorgeous cake for our small group.

Great experience. Luke was very knowledgeable and the talk was very interesting. Enjoyed handling the frames from the hive and spotting the queen. We got to see a hive with ‘calm’ bees and one with ‘spicier’ bees. There was a noticeable difference. Honey straight from the frame was lovely. Would highly recommend this experience.

An Absolute Gem of a company. Their products are amazing and their Beekeeping Experience days are absolute class. I recently did the Beekeeping day and learned so much! It starts with a talk about Bees and is a real eye opener. Luke is incredibly knowledgeable and teaches you all about the bees and how a hive works and how the colony work. It is done in a friendly relaxed way before putting your beekeeping kit on (Provided by Luke) and then you visit the hives as Luke opens the Hive to show you the live workings within the hives. It’s hands on ad he gets you involved but at the same time, lets you know you don’t have to do anything that doesn’t make you feel comfortable but at the same time, if you are happy to get involved, he lets you get involved. You finish with going back to the seated area to have Honey fresh from a frame out of the hive, with bread and Brie while you sit and chat. The group is friendly and everyone is there to learn and enjoy the day. An absolutely fantastic experience that I highly recommend doing this. It was bought for my for my birthday so if you don’t do it, I would recommend gifting it to someone. Highly recommended!!!

We signed up for the 4 hour bee experience and were very glad that we did. Luke kept us interested and entertained with his knowledge of beekeeping, this was illustrated with a glass hive box full of bees which I could have watched for hours and hours. We then suited up with our beekeper protective clothing and went to experience the hands on part at the hives. This again was fascinating and an eye opener. Luke ensured that we each got to handle the bees, they were as he told us, very mellow and not at all the angry swarming insects that some people may expect. An unforgetable experience. To finish off we got to taste the wonderful honey produced at the farm along with brie and walnuts.The icing on the cake was a goody bag with an informative booklet, beeswax candle, woollen bee and a honey stirrer to go with the honey we bought. Great value for money and thoroughly recommended.
